Objectives
Upon completion, participants will be able to:
1. List 5 characteristics of an “expert clinician”.
2. Self reflect on personal areas of weakness
associated with characteristics of an “expert
clinician” and formulate strategies for improving
these characteristics.
3. List 3 common clinical reasoning errors.
4. Formulate strategies for improving their own
clinical reasoning process through self-reflection
and recognition of clinical reasoning errors
common in their own practice.
5. Develop a systematic approach to patient
history and clinical examination at any joint
system in the body for a complete orthopedic
evaluation.
6. List the benefits of transverse friction massage
and other treatment strategies in the
management of chronic soft tissue lesions.
7. Recognize the importance of strength and
motor control of the hip and the impact of
impairments observed on the alignment and
kinematics in the lower chain.
Agenda
Part 1 (90 minutes). Dr. Holly Jonely, a master
clinician, performs an assessment of a patient she is
seeing for the first time in an orthopedic outpatient
clinical setting. This includes a comprehensive client
history and physical and functional examinations
including jumping, repeated step down and running
evaluation.
Part 2 (60 minutes). The treatment session will
establish a connection between objective findings
and noted impairments. Dr. Jonely devises a creative
an innovative progressive program for the patient
with a self-management emphasis.
Part 3 (2.5 hours). Explore the clinical decision
making process of master clinician Dr. Holly Jonely as
she responds using evidence based practice
references to questions and comments by Dr. Carole
Lewis. Enjoy listening to high level collegial
discussion loaded with lots of clinical suggestions.
Description
Experience two days in the life of Holly Jonely ScD, PT, COMT, ATC as she tackles the evaluation and management of chronic knee pain. She will follow a patient with multiple joint and muscle complaints through a systematic initial evaluation and two treatment sessions. You will have the opportunity to observe as if through her own eyes the direct clinician to patient interaction as Dr. Jonely demonstrates a patient intake, clinical examination, and management proposal. Step into the mind of a master clinician as you review the evaluation and treatment session along with commentary directed by Dr. Carole B. Lewis, PT, DPT, GCS, GTC, CCOEE, MPA, MSG, PhD, FAPTA with input from Dr. Jonely. Their discussions are packed with evidence based suggestions and support to assist in the management of a patient with chronic knee pain.
