Objectives
  • •Describe the basic neuroanatomy and physiology of respiration

  • •Identify the invasive and non–invasive ventilation techniques

  • •Articulate the positive and negative effects of tracheostomy and areas of function it impacts

  • •Describe tracheostomy tubes and speaking valve options and the benefits/contraindications for use

  • •Develop assessment and treatment strategies of speaking valves with tracheostomies

  • •Analyze common differences in pediatric and adult management of tracheostomies and speaking valves

  • •Recognize the importance of a team approach and the goals of the Global Tracheostomy Collaborative

Description

Respiration plays a critical role in basic bodily function. When patients are hospitalized unable to support themselves, several alternatives are available to help. However, these alternatives are not complete substitutes for how the respiratory system functions and may negatively impact several areas of life.

This seminar explores the basic anatomy and physiology of respiration and problems that occur when a patient is unable to support himself. Tracheostomies are often delayed in the hopes a patient will be extubated, no longer requiring a ventilator; however, this course will offer support for completing tracheostomies earlier in the process. Participants will learn about the benefits and challenges of a tracheostomy, the different types of tracheostomy tubes, and considerations for use. Evidence-based research regarding the various types of speaking valves available, valves that can be used in–line with a ventilators, and how the speaking valves impact daily care functions will be discussed. Participants will be able to return to their facilities with new tools to advocate for the team approach to tracheostomy care, assess and develop rehabilitation strategies to improve outcomes, and they will be able to differentiate adult and pediatric tracheostomy care.
